NICK Brennan hopes his PGA Cup heroics can help open up a new chapter in his career.

The Bowood Golf and Country Club professional played a key role as Great Britain & Ireland staged a stunning comeback to tie the match against the United States at De Vere Slaley Hall in Northumberland.

The home side, trailing 10.5-5.5 after two days of foursomes and fourballs, swept the Sunday singles 7.5-2.5 to tie the overall contest, Brennan defeating Chip Sullivan 3&2 to claim the final point.

While the result was sufficient for the US team to retain the Llandudno Trophy it was GB&I skipper Russell Weir’s players who were smiling at the climax.

Brennan said: “It was an incredible day for the team, we were really determined and it was an absolute buzz out there. It’s a fantastic experience and all about the golf at the end of the day.

“The team spirit we have got now, from not knowing guys at the beginning of the week, I consider all of them friends. It’s an awesome week.

“It feels like a win. We said we needed eight points and eight from 10 is a big ask. Seven-and-a-half is also a big ask but we had the attitude of let’s get at them and see what happens and see how they cope with the one-on-one thing and being under the cosh.”

Brennan had finished on the losing side in his two fourballs outings and, despite losing the first hole against Sullivan, soon got into his stride.

He added: “I was a little bit excited at the first hole and overshot the green, but then I holed my third shot for an eagle on the second and I was quite pumped up and it went from there.’’

It was a pleasing end to a successful season for Brennan, who was making his PGA Cup debut.

He said: “Hopefully, the bit of exposure I’ve had might help me on to a few bigger things. The PGA Cup was one of my ambitions but I have others, things like trying to get on tour.

“I want to kick on and play at the next level. I feel like I’ve got more in the tank, but a lot depends on things like getting a bit of sponsorship and hopefully this might help in that regard.’’

Brennan also paid tribute to Bowood coach Simon Shanks, who was at Slaley Hall, and fitness coach Joe Alford from Chippenham’s Body Revolution gym, who helped prepare him for the cup.

“Simon’s level of dedication to his pupils is exceptional and knowledge of the golf swing has been key in raising my game to a higher standard,’’ he added.

“Joe has been a massive influence in my golf game.

“With his knowledge I have made fantastic gains in strength and mobility which, given I’m a small guy, has helped me no end over the last year-and-a-half.’’
