NICK Brennan hopes he can even the score for Bowood Golf Resort against the United States as he prepares for his PGA Cup debut this weekend.

The 31-year-old, from the club near Calne, will be part of the Great Britain & Ireland team to take on the Americans at De Vere Slaley Hall in the Ryder Cup equivalent for PGA Professionals, which was getting under way today.

The honour – Brennan qualified after finishing joint fourth at the Glenmuir PGA Championship at the same venue in June – comes just two weeks after clubmate Jordan Smith was a member of the GB&I team that lost the amateur Walker Cup to the home team on Long Island.

“Jordan (Smith) enjoyed his experience at the Walker Cup, even though the Great Britain & Ireland team didn’t get the result they wanted, but hopefully we can put one of on the United States for a change,’’ said Brennan, who will have his best man, Ross Dixie, as his caddie for the three-day match, The event follows an almost identical format to the Ryder Cup, with foursomes, fourballs and singles matches.

“My parents (Mike and Eileen) live in Zambia but happen to be back in Ireland during this time so will come over for the event, which is tremendous for me,” added Brennan.

“However my fiancée (Bryony) is a schoolteacher at Manton and has to work so she can’t be here. That’s probably going to be the toughest part of the week.”

The USA have won 17 of the 25 PGA Cup matches stretching back to the first in 1973, including all but one since 1984.

But Brennan added: “We’re relatively young guys as a whole so hopefully we can go out and prove ourselves against the American team.

“We know we have to be up for it, focused at all times and just be very tough to beat. I’m looking forward to it.”

“Qualifying for the team was a bit of a surprise for most people but not for me as I was playing well all week,” he said.

“I don’t know any of the others in the team, so it is a case of ‘who’s this lad’ so I’ve got a bit of a point to prove.’’
