Derry Hill girls clinch league title

Wiltshire County Womens and Girls Football League

U16

Wootton Bassett rounded off their season with a 2-2 draw at Colebrook School against bottom side Swindon Town Ladies.

Under 14 11-a-side

The title was decided in a frantic 40 hours.

With two points separating the top three sides going into this week, Derry Hill knew they needed to win at least two of their last three games to be sure of the title, with FC Chippenham and Swindon Badgers both above them.

On Thursday evening Derry Hill made the short trip to Stanley Park to take on FC Chippenham, with the memory of a 7-0 defeat earlier in the season still in their minds.

Chippenham needed a win to take anything from a season which had promised so much.

It was a tense encounter as expected but there was much good football to admire from both sides.

Derry Hill took the lead early in the first half when Hannah Shepherd converted a chance.

Thunder then had a penalty denied, with the ball already on the spot the referee took advice from the linesman who had flagged for offside.

In the second half Derry Hill pushed for a second goal, eventually it came from a wonderful solo effort from Emily Bogg.

Chippenham kept pressing and Derry Hill rode their luck on several occasions, but held on to the end to record a 2-0 win.

This meant they were guaranteed second place, but knew a win against Swindon Badgers on Saturday morning would clinch the title.

It was an early start with a 10am kick-off, the result of the game effectively deciding the destination of the title.

Derry Hill took the lead early on through an Emily Bogg solo effort from tight to the goal line but Badgers gained an equaliser just before half time through Charlotte Lancaster.

In the second half, Abbie Mann scored from an Emily Bogg corner but Badgers again equalised about 15 minutes later through Rebecca Cotton.

The final minutes were tense but Emily Bogg scored the winner from 20 yards to secure the victory and the league title.

The result meant that Derry Hill could not be caught with one game remaining, and also left Badgers needing 1 point to clinch the runners-up spot in their remaining game.

A tremendous climax to an exciting season with 3 teams vying for the title throughout the season, and Swindon Town adding to the interest with a strong finish to the season.

U14 7-A-SIDE

Devizes Town hosted Trowbridge Wanderers on Saturday knowing they still needed points to clinch the runners-up position.

They duly ran out 6-0 winners against Wanderers.

Sophie Trusler lead the way with a hat-trick, and Hannah Morgan added to the tally, while 2 own-goals completed the scoring.

With Blunsdon unable to fulfill their fixture against Trowbridge Town the win clinched the second spot in the Division.

U13

The title fell to Melksham Town who remained unbeaten in the League throughout the season, with Trowbridge Town finishing as runners-up.

U12 Division A

In the Under-12 league Derry Hill Lightning made it a weekend to remember for the Club with an emphatic 6-0 victory over Wootton Bassett to round off the season for both teams.

Two goals each from Emma Gorman and Ashleigh Hayes and one each for Lia King and Jess Law made it a satisfying end to the season for the younger Derry Hill girls who finished a creditable 5th in the league.

At the top, Swindon Town Ladies visited Melksham and came away with 3 points from a 4-0 victory to maintain the pressure on leaders Swindon Spitfires.

Scorers for Swindon were Charlotte Diss (2), Nicole Farmer and Sarah Stiles. With two crucial matches next week and the likely decider the following weekend between the two Swindon teams either team can still clinch the only outstanding title.

U11

A busy weekend for Swindon Spitfires saw them complete their league campaign and in the process clinch the runners-up position.

On Saturday Spitfires were hosted by FC Chippenham and a 4-1 victory wrapped up 2nd place.

On Sunday, with the final positions already settled, it was second v first at South Marston with Trowbridge Town winning 3-2 to finish the season with a 100 per cent league record, 15 wins from 15 matches.

U10

Swindon Spitfires also clinched the U10 league title, but were made to fight all the way to a 2-2 draw by visitors Melksham Town Youth.

The result means that Melksham need to avoid defeat in their last game away to Swindon Town Ladies if they are to clinch the runners-up spot.

Swindon Town need to win if they are to take that honour from Melksham in one of the tightest and most competitive divisions in the League.
