Town round off season with home win

Full time Saturday 3rd May

Match report from the County Ground, Swindon

Coca Cola League One

Fulltime Swindon Town 1 Millwall 1

With both teams assured of League One status again next season, an end of term atmosphere was guaranteed for this last game of the campaign.

Town boss Maurice Malpas chose to leave newly crowned Player of the Year Miguel Comminges out, and injury to Jerel Ifil gave Sean Morrison a start. A viral infection suffered by Jack Smith moved Jon-Paul McGovern to right back with Chris Allen named in midfield, and youngsters Ben Joyce, Kurt Hammond and Nathan Thompson were named on the bench.

The Lions' manager Kenny Jackett was without defenders Tony Craig and Andy Frampton through injury, leaving Zoumana Bakayogo to step into the left back role. Chris Hackett was available and named amongst the substitutes.

The game kicked off with Millwall attacking the Town End and just as with last weekend's game at Gillingham, a goal was not too long in coming.

An Ahmet Brkovic free kick some 35 yards from goal on the right just six minutes in found Danny Senda on the far post, and the centre back rose unmarked to head easily passed a startled Peter Brezovan to give the away side the upper hand.

Three minutes later Billy Paynter ran at Rhys Evans in the Millwall goal and fired goalwards, but the ex-Swindon stopper blocked as Simon Cox looked to pick up any scraps.

Sean Morrison then produced a magnificent tackle to deny Simpson as he homed in on goal, before McGovern's excellent right wing cross saw Timlin's header pawed away by Evans at the other end.

As the game approached the half hour mark, Millwall were producing the better movement but good work down the Town right saw a scramble in the Millwall box. Michael Timlin stretched for the ball and was clattered to he ground, resulting in referee Haywood pointing to the spot.

Cox stepped up to drive the ball to Evans' right for his 15th goal of the season and to level the match.

Next, Timlin and Cox combined to produce a chance, but Evans was quick off his line to deny Paynter. On 37 minutes. McGovern curled a 20-yard free kick narrowly wide of the top right hand corner.

Goal scorer Senda volleyed a chance wide of the far post when he again found himself free, then McGovern beat two men on the wing and shot into the six yard box for Paynter to head over.

With the first half in added time, an awkward fall by Senda ended with the defender on the floor in distress, and the Millwall goal scorer completed the match and his season on a stretcher.

With added time now added to added, Paynter still had time to find the visitors' net but turned to see a linesman's flag rule the effort out.

Bright sunshine greeted the return of the teams and this time it was Town who started the brighter of the two.

On 51 minutes, Cox turned in midfield and found Paynter, The striker cut inside and invited Anthony McNamee to try his luck from 25 yards, and the wide man's well placed shot left Evans stranded to give Town the lead.

Five minutes later Lions' midfielder Ryan Smith turned McGovern inside out and fed Bakayogo, but his cross was clutched by Peter Brezovan in the Town goal.

Just before the hour, McNamee again struck from 30 yards, but this effort was safely gathered by Evans, then three minutes later the same Town man tricked his way down the left, and when Chris Allen's shot was blocked, Paynter reacted to bring a fine save from Evans.

Pat Kanyuka, now on for Allen was moved to right back allowing McGovern to move into midfield and on 71 minutes, Brezovan was forced to charge to the edge of his box and eventually kicked away for a corner. From Neil Harris' set piece, substitute Ali Fuseini struck straight at Brezovan from 12 yards.

Millwall were committing more and more players forward as the chased an equaliser and a shot from Smith comfortably cleared the bar, but as the season entered it's final ten minutes, the concentration of both sides was tested by the arrival of 75 police officers to control the away supporters who had been unobtrusive all match.

Paul Robinson headed a Brkovic free kick well wide from yet another unmarked position in the heart of Town's defence, then in added time Jay Simpson drove well wide of Brezovan's right hand to bring down the curtain on 2007/08 with a 13th place League One finish for Swindon.
