FRIENDLY: Calne Town 0 Chippenham Town 6

Chippenham Town dusted off their scoring boots and got their pre-season off to a winning start by beating Calne Town earlier today to retain the annual Fred Rutty Trophy.

New signings Lee Phillips, Dean Griffiths, Brandon Barnes, Luke Ballinger, Scott Rogers and Josh Egan all featured for Nathan Rudge’s side, along with defender Tom Seery, who has agreed to become the Bluebirds’ latest recruit.

Chippenham took the lead six minutes in when Phillips latched on to strike partner Griffiths’ downward header on the byline.

The Chippenham new-boy turned past a Calne defender and fired home across Lilywhites keeper Steve Allison and into the side-netting.

Around ten minutes later, the visitors were 2-0 up when Barnes’ viscous inswinging corner was touched on and found Phillips at the back post.

The Bluebirds striker was left with an easy finish as he nodded into the roof of the net to claim a quick-fire double.

Ballinger, who had caused problems for Jeff Roberts and Drew Youngsam’s Calne for the whole of the first half, got himself on the scoresheet as the first period drew to a close.

The Chippenham winger blasted home a free-kick from just outside the Lilywhites area to make it 3-0, giving the hosts’ Allison no chance.

Rudge’s men were handed the chance to make it 4-0 minutes into the second half, when Barnes, who had switched up front from the left wing, was brought down by Calne substitute goalie Jamie Bartlett for a penalty.

Phillips stepped up to try to grab a hat-trick on his Bluebirds debut but got his spot-kick all wrong as he blazed over the bar.

Shortly afterwards though, Phillips helped his side score their fourth as he exchanged passes with James Guthrie, who fired home into the right-corner from the edge of the area.

With just over ten minutes to go, Chippenham made it 5-0 as Egan was played through into the area and despite a brave challenge from the Lilywhites’ Bartlett, the ball squirmed under the keeper’s body and into the net.

Egan almost grabbed a second moments later when he volleyed towards goal from Barnes’ pass but his shot cannoned against the upright and Alan Griffin was off target with the follow-up.

With minutes left to go, the scoring was rounded off by the Bluebirds’ player-manager, who had entered the game midway through the second half.

The ball was fired into the Calne area and after a goalmouth scramble, Rudge was on hand to poke home from close range.
