ENGLAND international Graham Shadwell had to give second best to Westlecot’s Mel Biggs again in the last 16 of the men’s county national singles championship at Devizes on Monday.

It was on the same green in last year’s singles final that Spencer Moulton’s Shadwell saw Biggs come powering back from 20-6 down to snatch a dramatic 21-20 win.

This time around, Biggs took the honours 21-7 to set-up a quarter-final meeting with Amesbury’s Mike Tyler who beat Middleton Cup team manager Dave Snell (Wootton Bassett) 21-15.

In the other two matches, there were comfortable victories for Nick Grenfell (Box) and Ian Jefferies (Westlecot).

The other four last 16 matches were at Wootton Bassett where Chippenhan Town’s Bill McCay overcame Miles Roberts to book a quarter-final place. But teammate Jeremy Haselton was well beaten by Paul Kistle (Westlecot).

Middleton Cup player Nick Revell had to battle back from 19-15 down for a 21-19 victory over Pete Stinchcombe (Malmesbury).
