BOWLS: County ladies suffer singles defeats

THE second round in the county ladies national singles championships produced a host of shocks on Monday night.

Three players only, Ellen Bolland (Stratton Churchway), Alison Fail (Purton) and defending champion Margaret Annetts (Salisbury), who reached last year’s third round survived this time around to reach the last 16.

Six out of 10 ladies who played for Wiltshire in this season’s Johns Trophy inter-county championship side bit the dust, with only reigning champion Annetts and Fail plus Janice Bull (Amesbury) and Janet Willis (Stratton Churchway) surviving.

The last 16 in the county ladies singles will be played on Friday, with the eight winners progressing to the quarter and semi-finals at Salisbury on Sunday (10.30am).

The two winning semi-finalists will earn the right to represent Wiltshire at Royal Leamington Spa in the National Championships.

LAST 16 DRAW: Ellen Bolland (S Churchway) v Irene Button (Chippenham T); Julia Hunt (Wanborough) v Pat Murray (Wootton Bassett); Alison Fail (Purton) v Geraldine Reade (Westlecot); Lucy Smith (WB) v Janet Willis (S C’way); Janet Hardie (Box) v Marcia Hartley (Spencer Moulton); Christabel Francis (Spencer Melksham) v Margaret Griffin (Wilton); Dawn Toomer (Wilton) v Janice Bull (Amesbury); Margaret Annetts (Salisbury) v Maureen Woolley (Alderbury).
