BOWLS: Trophy hopes dashed for ladies

WILTSHIRE Ladies hopes of success in this year’s revamped Johns Trophy are over.

They needed a victory over Warwickshire in their third and last West Group A inter-county championship match last Saturday to win the section and qualify for the quarter-finals.

But they were denied progress as they lost 126-104 on shots and 16-6 on points at Norgren, Shipston-on-Stour.

This loss allowed Somerset, who Wiltshire thumped 124-94 and by 20-2 on points in their opening game, to reach the last eight after beating Gloucestershire 115-102 (18-4) in their final group match.

Somerset finished on 38, one ahead of Gloucestershire with Wiltshire third on 31 and Warwickshire on 26 points.

Wiltshire took the honours on three of the six rinks at Norgren with wins from Box skips Carol Grenfell and Alex Jacobs while Spencer Melksham’s Delia Godwin quartet recorded the other.

Godwin’s three-shot win gave her team of Chris Mitchell (Purton), Sue Burgess (Warminster), Marcia Cottle (Spencer Melksham) and herself the distinction of being the only unbeaten Wiltshire rink during this season’s Johns Trophy group campaign.

Wiltshire were always trailing Warwickshire across the board being 25-33 and 47-63 down at five and ten ends respectively.

They managed to cut the deficit to only 78-88 at 15 ends but their hosts then pulled away again to a 22 shots victory.

Score: Wiltshire lost to Warwickshire 104-126 and by 6pts to 16.

ALTHOUGH leading at the halfway mark Wiltshire, under the leadership of county president June Corbett (Town Gardens), were beaten by Berkshire in their friendly match at Pewsey.

Corbett’s representative side led 32-27 and 60-55 at five and 10 ends respectively but then the pendulum swung the other way.

They trailed by six shots 79-85 and 95-101 across the board at 15 and 18 ends but then conceded a massive 30 shots in the last three and only scored ten to lose 131-105.

Wiltshire took the honours on three of the six rinks with Corbett winning the presidential battle against her Berkshire counterpart from Desborough (Maidenhead) and also recording Wiltshire’s biggest rink success.

A FEW days later Wiltshire also lost to Glamorgan 120-119 in another friendly match staged at Chippenham Town.

Despite the narrow loss June Corbett’s representative team only took the honours on two of the six rinks.

Babs Salter’s quartet won by four shots but Wiltshire were indebted to the rink skipped by Joan Coleman (Amesbury) that racked up a 24 shot win that enabled the match to eventually go down to the last shot on the very last end which Glamorgan took.
