TOOLSTATION LEAGUE FIRST DIVISION: Gittens goal a winner for Devizes

DEVIZES Town caretaker boss Jamie Bayes admitted his side did not produce a classic performance when scraping to a win last Saturday.

Paul Gittens’ first goal for Devizes was enough for victory over Almondsbury UWE at Nursteed Road, cutting the gap at the bottom of the Toolstation League First Division to a point.

With two minutes of the first half remaining, Liam Hill went on a solo run and beat a host of Almondsbury defenders before setting up striker Gittens, who rounded the keeper and finished from a tight angle.

Bayes’ men held on to their lead in the second period and the Devizes chief said: “We didn’t really play that well but luckily, our goal ended up being the difference.

“They had a few half-chances but they didn’t really test Lewis (Porter, goalkeeper) at all.

“Everyone in the squad is really happy at the moment.

“We’ve been staying in the clubhouse until eight or nine celebrating the victories recently and it’s good that the spirits are high.”

Striker Adam Heath returned to the side against Almondsbury and skipper Gary Campbell should be back for this weekend’s home clash with Oldland Abbotonians.

The Bristol side are four points ahead of Devizes in 16th place.
