SWINDON Robins soared to the top of the SGB Premiership table with a 51-39 win over Wolverhampton Wolves at the Abbey Stadium.

The home side went into the meeting on the back of two away defeats to Belle Vue and Somerset Rebels.

While his team completed an impressive win at home over Wolves, who were the league leaders before the tapes went up for heat, team boss Alun Rossiter reiterated that consistency is the key for his team.

“We just had a bit of a blip this week. We hit a very good Belle Vue team on Monday and then had a determined Somerset team on Wednesday night, we didn’t expect anything else,” he said.

“The key tonight was we never fell behind. We won 4-2 throughout the night and I think Zach’s (Wajtknecht) heat 12 win over Rory Schlein finished them off.

“Zach is getting more and more aggressive and long may that continue. He is only a youngster, but he has such a lovely style on the bike.

“I’m really pleased for him. He has come back from a nasty injury and he is doing really well. Apart from him, Troy Batchelor again, he had one race where something when wrong with his bike.

“He then jumped on his second bike and went through the card. He was frustrated to lose that race as it one it could have potentially won, and he could have had a 15-point maximum.

“I said to the team that consistency is important, but it’s not the end of the world. If one of them gets double figures, I only need sixes, sevens and eights if they do that and the reserves get five between them then it’s either a point or a win – simple as that.”

Fellow youngster Jack Smith also got off the mark, as he claimed his first point for Swindon with a third-place finish.

Rossiter urged supporters to get behind the former Belle Vue man, insisting there is plenty to come from him.

“I’m sure he will pick up more points but it is not going to be easy. I don’t see anyone else who could come in and do better, if I did then I would have put them in. I’m sure he’ll come good.”

The hosts got off to an ideal start. Skipper Nick Morris was quickest off the line in the opening heat to see off Jacob Thorssell, who came in second.

Wajtknecht furthered the advantage to 8-4 after he shut the door on Ashley Morris, Smith earning his first point for Swindon in the second.

In the third, David Bellego and Batchelor gated well, the former losing ground after turn one. However, Batchelor looked comfortable in front to hold on for a third successive 4-2 heat win.

Tobiasz Musielak made a rapid start in his first outing as he left the rest of the field in his wake.

Batchelor and Bellego made a slow start in the seventh, but a superb move from the Frenchman saw him overtake both of the visitors on turn one, as he took the heat win.

Swindon recovered well from a slow start in the sixth. Morris battled but settled for second while Ellis levelled the heat with third.

A heat later, Musielak emerged as the frontrunner from the tapes and showed speed down the stretch to keep Rory Schlein away but couldn’t prevent the visitor getting the win.

Ellis was replaced by Wajtknecht in the eighth and the teenager produced a huge ride to compete with Morris but couldn’t get in front as Wolves closed the gap to 26-22.

Swindon won the next heat 4-2 after Batchelor took long way round the first bend to take the lead while Bellego took third, stretching the score to 30-24.

Heat 10 was the most competitive as Schlein looked to drive Morris wide on the opening bend, but the Aussie took the inside line once the gap appeared for the win.

The teams drew the 11th, but the Robins came roaring back with a 5-1 win with Batchelor and Wajtknecht combining well for a crucial 5-1 win.

Swindon only needed to tie the 13th heat to return to the top of the table and Morris and Musielak crossed the line second and third to seal the win.

Wolves restored some pride with a 4-2 in 14 before Swindon returned the favour in heat 15, Batchelor taking the win, ahead of Morris in third.
