CALNE Town boss Ben Redford was delighted to see his side stretch their unbeaten run in the Toolstation League First Division to a third game with a convincing 3-1 win away to Bishops Sutton on Tuesday night.

Redford felt the performance was one of the best his team have produced this season, with the win pushing them up 13th in the table.

“It was a great result and probably the best we’ve played all season,” said Redford, whose side shared a 1-1 draw with title-chasing Westbury United on Saturday.

“It’s good to go on a unbeaten run. We’ve played three sides above us and come away with seven points.”

The back-to-back results are the type of consistency Redford and Calne have been looking for after a stuttering season.

Top scorer Stuart Windsor bagged his 17th goal of the season with a clinical finish to open the scoring for Calne against Sutton.

That effort kick-started the visitors’ momentum and it wasn’t long until striker Rory Worthington netted the second with a fine strike.

Sutton responded to cut the deficit but defender Rich Hudson was able to kill the game off for Calne when he scored his first goal of the season.

Injuries to key players in recent matches meant Calne have often had to rely on their U18s and boss Redford had high praise of one youngster, Aaron Witchell, who was named man of the match against Sutton.

Witchell had previously been Calne’s hero on Saturday, as his second-half strike earned them a point at home to Westbury.

Redford said: “I honestly can’t praise him enough. He’s been unlucky not to score more over the last few games. He played really well out of position.”

The next challenge facing Calne is a home match against sixth-in-the-table Cheddar.

Redford said: “Cheddar are a good side. They are probably the best football playing side in the league.”

Elsewhere, Malmesbury Victoria also enjoyed that winning feeling on Tuesday night as they overcame Portishead Town 2-1 away from home.

The visitors’ goals fell to strikers Joe Wych and Josh Hughes.

Chippenham Park suffered a heavy home defeat on Saturday as they lost 5-0 against second-placed Roman Glass St George.

Roman Glass went into the half-time interval 4-0 up, leaving Chippenham with a lot of ground to make up. However they were unable to recover any goals in the second half.

Park were due to return to action at Chard Town last night, although Devizes Town’s scheduled trip to Westbury was postponed.

Corsham Town had no game last weekend but face a Wiltshire derby on Saturday away at Warminster Town.

Chippenham Park, Devizes and Malmesbury are all on the road as well, travelling to Welton Rovers, Radstock Town and Almondsbury respectively.
