SWINDON Town's League Two clash at Accrington Stanley this afternoon has been postponed due to a frozen pitch.

The Lancashire club revealed the news at around 12.50pm this lunchtime following a further inspection of the WHAM Stadium playing surface.

The match had originally been declared on this morning after referee David Webb made a precautionary pitch inspection at around 10.30am.

Despite snowfalls in the north of England yesterday no further snow had fallen in Accrington overnight, Stanley covering up areas of their pitch that do not get sunlight, while roads around the ground were also declared clear.

However, with official Webb remaining at the ground, a further examination revealed the pitch to be unplayable following further snow, leading to the postponement decision.

A Stanley statement via Twitter said: "Today's game against Swindon Town is OFF due to a frozen pitch. The pitch has deteriorated since this morning due to snow in East Lancashire.

"Referee David Webb examined the pitch with his fellow officials and said it was unplayable.''

Town's squad meanwhile, were set to hold a training session this afternoon in place of the called-off match.

A rearrangement date for the match has yet to be revealed, although Town's free Saturday on January 6 following their FA Cup exit at Stevenage last week could now be an option, with Accrington also out of the competition.
