SWINDON Town’s Matt Taylor believes it is a player’s appetite on the pitch that will determine how successful their team is rather than how they line up.

Manager David Flitcroft fielded a new look formation in Town’s most recent match, sending his side out with a three-man defence for the first time in the 1-0 Checkatrade Trophy defeat at home to Forest Green Rovers on Tuesday night.

Although Taylor felt the Swindon squad adapted well to that at the first time of asking, the 36-year-old feels those watching on from the stands and further afield try to read too much into how a team shapes up on the pitch.

Instead, the ex-Portsmouth and West Ham United player thinks the outcome of matches is down to each man winning their individual battles.

“Formations are made a lot of, that’s my personal opinion,” said Taylor.

“It’s 11 men against 11 men. You have got to have the desire to want to beat your opposite number that you are playing against.

“At times, and this is within all levels of football, formation is either lauded or everyone has a problem with it and says you are playing it wrong.

“At the end of the day, it’s 11 against 11.”

Town return to League Two action this afternoon with a trip to third-placed Accrington Stanley, looking to arrest a run of four straight defeats.

A trip to the Wham Stadium can play on the minds of visiting teams due to its intimate nature and only Kingsmeadow, the home of League One side AFC Wimbledon, holds fewer than its 5,057 capacity throughout the Football League.

However, Taylor, who can boast a wealth of experience right up to the Premier League, sees no reason why Town should be at a psychological disadvantage this weekend.

“It’s League Two at the end of the day, that’s what you come to expect,” said Taylor.

“It is a ground that their players probably thrive on with the atmosphere but the pitch will be no different in terms of the grass on it from ours.

“We need to go there with a positive frame of mind and prepare correctly and try to get a result.

“It’s a game away from home and we have been in good form away from home this season so it’s an opportunity to try to get three points.

“I am sure it will be a very difficult game as Accrington are in good form. It’s one that everyone is looking forward to.”
