DAVID Flitcroft will give real thought to sticking with a revamped 3-4-3 formation for his Swindon Town side after deeming it a success against Forest Green Rovers on Tuesday night.

Town have primarily fielded either a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 line-up so far this season but Flitcroft rolled the dice to try something new in an effort to arrest the team’s recent poor sequence of results.

Although the change failed to halt Swindon’s losing run as Rovers edged to a late 1-0 success in the second round of the Checkatrade Trophy, Flitcroft took heart from what he saw at the Energy Check County Ground.

Town were much more robust than they were when slumping to a heavy 5-2 defeat at Stevenage in the FA Cup second round three days earlier and ahead of this weekend’s trip to Accrington Stanley in League Two, Flitcroft revealed a fresh approach is something he has been plotting for a while.

“It was not just because of Stevenage, we have been looking at it and working on something on the training ground,” said Flitcroft.

“We have got to change our focus at home and really improve our home form. A change in system might be something we have to look at as if you keep doing the same things, you are likely to get the same results.

“We have looked at it and the lads committed to it fantastically on Tuesday night and we did look solid. That was Forest Green’s full-on team and they didn’t create a lot.

“We have got a lot of things that we can draw out of that which we can take into the league campaign now.

“It was something that for a couple of weeks we have been sizing up. We have been able to look at it in a live game now.

“With the home form we have got, you have got to consider everything, “We spoke about it at length and spoke about what was needed but certainly the structure looked good on Tuesday.

“We will go back and watch it and identify what was good and what was right about it. It was certainly worth exploring it in Tuesday’s match.”

Ellis Iandolo and Kyle Knoyle both pressed their claims for more regular starting berths after producing solid displays as wing-backs against Forest Green.

In the wake of that match, Flitcroft stated he will not be afraid to freshen things up if he thinks it will help spark a turnaround in fortunes for his side.

“Without doubt they have given us something to think about,” add Flitcroft.

“Kyle was struggling towards the end, so we have got to get to the bottom of that injury, but Ellis, with the quality and his bravery in getting on the ball and getting his crosses in, it was a real bold performance from him.

“Dale Bennett is a good player but Ellis went toe-to-toe with him, won all his duels and was fantastic and his crossing was outstanding.

“The one thing I loved about his performance was that competitive streak against a very competitive player.

“It has certainly given us food for thought.”
