JASON Doyle will return to Swindon Robins later this month fighting fit and ready to spearhead their SGB Premiership charge, according to team manager Alun Rossiter.

Australian Doyle looked on course to be crowned world champion for the first time last season, winning four times in the Speedway Grand Prix Series to lead the standings with two events to go.

However, the 31-year-old’s campaign was cut short by a crash in the penultimate race in Poland, which forced him to undergo an operation on his elbow and he could only watch as Greg Hancock claimed the title in late October.

Rossiter reports that Doyle has made a full recovery from his winter surgery and the Swindon skipper will return to the Abbey Stadium for the 2017 campaign carrying no physical or mental worries ahead of their Premiership opener against Leicester Lions on April 1.

“I have had a good chat with Jason and speaking to him about his injuries, he doesn’t feel that there is any comeback,” said Rossiter.

“With the crashes, he didn’t crash, they were caused by other people. He is confident that he will come back just as strong and build up again.

“His head is in a good place, he’s raring to go and can’t wait.

“He has had all the wire taken out of his elbow and he is feeling good because that was causing him a little bit of jip.

“It was starting to rub but he had it taken out in Australia.

“Apparently it’s healed back really well, so it’s great news for him and for us.”

Doyle led the points average’s in the top flight last year and has been given a hefty average of 13.41 for the new season.

Rossiter has been forced to use up a sizeable allocation of his 50-point total on the Aussie but the Robins boss has no doubt his number one will repay that faith on the track.

“He takes up the bulk of the points in our team so we are banking on his heavy scores and I have got no worries in that regard,” said Rossiter.

“The way he spoke to me, he is ready to go and ready to kick on from where he was last year.”
