DION Conroy conceded that there was a sense of devastation in the Swindon Town dressing room after their late lapse cost them a crucial victory at Bradford City on Saturday.

With Town scrapping for their League One survival, Nicky Ajose appeared to have got them on the way to three priceless points at Valley Parade, only for the visitors’ dreams to come crashing down.

After threatening all afternoon, the Bantams finally broke down Town’s resistance five minutes from time through Charlie Wyke before the same player then completed the comeback in the final minute of normal time.

Centre-back Conroy admitted Bradford were a danger throughout the game but the fact that Town were able to hold them off for so long only to eventually fold under pressure made the defeat even harder to take.

“Everyone is a bit gutted. At 1-0 up, I think we only had about 15 minutes to go,” said Conroy.

“We could have dealt with their goals a bit better but we just go to the next game now and try to get the wins we need to stay up.

“It was difficult the whole game. They had all their fans behind them, they were very direct and they had a good front-line but I thought we dealt with it quite well the whole game, it’s just unfortunate we conceded two goals in the last 10 minutes.

“The last 10 minutes were like the whole game, really. They were putting crosses into the box and it was just that the ball fell to one of their players for the second goal and he managed to tap it in.

“We didn’t have any luck on our side today but we just go into the next game and hopefully get three points.”

Balls into the box caused problems for Town all afternoon but head coach Luke Williams tried to counter that at half-time by switching from a 4-4-2 to a 3-5-2 formation.

That involved John Goddard shifting to an unfamiliar left wing-back role and Conroy was pleased with how Swindon coped with the tactical switch, although that counted for nothing come the final whistle.

“Jonny did really well, he worked as hard as he could,” said Conroy.

“I think the second half was a bit better for us and we had a few chances and could have killed the game off. We will learn from what we didn’t do so well and take that into the next game.”
