DESPITE their tender years, Swindon Town head coach Luke Williams believes there cannot be a bedding-in period for his team’s new trio of Chelsea loanees.

Swapping west London for the County Ground, creative midfielder Charlie Colkett, 20, versatile defender Fankaty Dabo, 20, and pacy forward Islam Feruz, 21, all arrived this week, following in the footsteps of Ben Gladwin, who has returned to the club for a second loan spell from Queens Park Rangers.

With the incoming Chelsea trio adding much-needed reinforcement to Swindon’s squad, there will be no softly, softly approach taken as they integrate but Williams believes that his new recruits are all champing at the bit to make an instant impact.

“The reality is, nobody’s patient in football. They need to hit the ground running and this environment is unforgiving,” said the Town head coach.

“There’s very, very little time and it’s just a fact that we will, of course, support them and give them the reassurance that they need if things don’t go perfectly will – the fans won’t and the media probably won’t.

“We’ll be doing everything we possibly can to get them ready and to make sure that they’re successful from the off.

“The boys coming in and Ben returning; they want to show everybody in the group what talents they’ve got.

“They’re here and they’re ready and they’re hungry to play, and, of course, the players that have been with us all the time see the new faces and they’re training to say: ‘don’t forget about us, as well’.

“There’s always an element of risk but what I can tell you is that these boys are really hungry and they’re really putting their hand up – they want to play.

“I’m sure they’ve been involved in training sessions where they’ve been told: ‘right, you’re with the first team now’ and they’ve looked around and it’s Eden Hazard and it’s (Cesc) Fabregas and it’s John Terry.

“They’ve been exposed to a lot in their early careers. They’ll be looking at this as an opportunity and not a threat.”

Meanwhile, Williams, who is not at the forefront of Town’s transfer manoeuvres, was unable to confirm that the club tabled a six-figure bid for Dagenham & Redbridge striker Oliver Hawkins last week.

The Advertiser understands that the Daggers are seeking a fee of around £500,000 for Hawkins’ services, as well as a loan back for the rest of the season.

Williams said: “One of the staff knows a little bit about him and we were discussing what we think of the player but in terms of do I know whether or not there was an official approach? – I don’t, unfortunately.”
