YOUNG Swindon Town goalkeeper Will Henry says last week’s involvement in a national training camp has fuelled his fire to make it in the game.

Henry, who turned 18 over the summer, joined up with some of the brightest up-and-coming stoppers in the country at a two-day England Goalkeepers Camp at St George’s Park.

The teenager only made his first-team debut less than eight months ago but after being put through his paces at the National Football Centre, Henry has returned to Town this week itching to continue his rapid rise.

“I just really enjoyed the experience. Wearing the Three Lions kit was just unbelievable and I thoroughly enjoyed it,” said Henry, who is back-up to number one Lawrence Vigouroux at the County Ground this season.

“I know it’s the home of the national team but it’s unbelievable, they have got absolutely everything there that a footballer could dream of facility-wise.

“It was (mainly players from) lower down the rankings at big clubs. I don’t think any of them had played first-team football, which was weird for me going there as the most experienced.

“Being my first time going, I found it quite weird as a couple were asking me what it’s like to play league football. I asked questions about what it is like to be at top clubs and stuff like that but it was a nice feeling that they were asking me what it is like to play league football.

“It was a good standard of goalkeepers, they have come from top clubs so they are going to have good ability. It was good to see where I am in my development compared to them.

“It’s not every day that you get called up to go training with your national team. I was just concentrating fully on making sure I put the right performances in and made a good first impression.

“I think (to make an England age group squad) is the next step, hopefully. I have just got to keep my head down, work hard and keep doing what I am doing and take my chances when I have got the chance to play and hopefully keep impressing them.”

For Henry, that next chance to impress is likely to come in this evening’s Checkatrade Trophy second round clash at home to League Two side Luton Town.

Henry has started all three games for Town so far in the competition and the fact they topped Group C is down in no small part to his performances, with the 18-year-old to the fore in both penalty shoot-out success over Oxford United and Exeter City.

The youngster says he would not turn down the chance to be the hero for Town in similar circumstances against the Hatters this evening, although the top priority is seeing the side safely through.

“For me, it would be great to have a penalty shoot-out again where I am the hero but obviously I want the easiest possible game and I want a good performance from the team and just to win and make sure we are in the hat for the next round,” said Henry.

“Mainly it’s instinct (with penalties). I normally have one side in my head but if they make an obvious movement and their body changes, which gives away where they are going to go, then maybe I will change, but normally I have one way that I am going to go.

“These games have been good for me as I have had the chance to play and I think I have done really well, so I have got to make sure I keep doing that.

“They are helping me move forward with my development as they are first-team games, so it’s good experience.”
