SWINDON Town changing to a flat back four has highlighted how flexible their team can be, according to striker Nathan Delfouneso.

Previously, head coach Luke Williams has stated that he hasn’t had the personnel at his disposal to move from a three-at-the-back system.

However, with Jamie Sendles-White, Raphael Branco and Lloyd Jones all missing from the rear guard, Williams’ hand was forced last week to change things about.

As a result, Town have kept two clean sheets and looked solid at the back against an in-form Rochdale side on Tuesday night.

While Delfouneso believes that there wasn’t too much at fault with their previous formation, the current style, with two defensive midfielders protecting the back line, has seen needless errors cut to a minimum.

“In a formation with three at the back, we weren’t getting battered. There were just mistakes here and there but at the same time, we were always in the games,” he told the local media.

“I think it just shows how versatile we are.

“We have seemed to be, especially in the last two games, very solid with four at the back and two in front, but we can change it up.

“We don’t have to play with the three at the back. We can play with four at the back and still be solid, and still be a threat going forward as well.

“That is a good thing. As a team as a whole, we are comfortable paying different formations, which is also good for the team.

“If (Luke Williams) feels three at the back is good, four at the back is good; I think it won’t affect us either way. We can adapt, which is a very good trait.”

Town play a Walsall side today who will match up to Swindon’s 4-2-3-1 formation at the County Ground.

Despite Walsall having won three of their last four outings, like on Tuesday night, Delfouneso is confident his side can stop another team’s run dead in its tracks.

“Walsall is going to be another tough game,” added the striker.

“As long as we recover right, we get everything right and prepare correctly, there is nothing that is stopping us from doing it again.”

Defender Branco will serve the final game of his three-match suspension this afternoon but Town will be able to welcome back midfielder Yaser Kasim, who missed Tuesday’s Rochdale as a result of a one-match ban for accumulating five yellow cards.

Meanwhile, Darnell Furlong, Conor Thomas and Bradley Barry will all be walking a tightrope against the Saddlers, with all three currently on four bookings.

l TOWN’s U18s have been drawn away to Salisbury in the first round of the FA Youth Cup, with ties to be played on Thursday, November 3.
