JOHN Goddard made his most telling contribution since signing for Swindon Town on Saturday by setting up both goals in their impressive 2-0 win away at Oldham Athletic.

The 23-year-old has been unable to nail down a regular place in the Town starting XI following a summer switch from National League side Woking but it will be very difficult for head coach Luke Williams to drop him on the back of his display at Boundary Park.

Goddard was dynamic as the most advanced of Swindon’s midfield trio and seemed at the heart of all of their most dangerous attacking play, highlighted by the fact he provided the killer final ball for both Jonathan Obika and Brandon Ormonde-Ottewill to hit the back of the Latics’ net.

“I thought we were excellent. I thought we thoroughly deserved the win and it was a perfect away performance,” Goddard told BBC Wiltshire post-match.

“We had a clean sheet at one end and we looked really threatening at the other, so we are really happy.

“I’m pleased to be involved in both goals. I felt good going forwards and felt I got in some dangerous areas and am just glad to contribute to the team.

“I have been in and out of the side since the start of the season and have been waiting patiently for my chance. I am just happy to play a part in the result and two assists is a nice way to do that.

“It was a lovely move (for the first goal). That’s what we try to work towards, we are a passing side. When it comes together like that and you can finish it off with a goal, it’s a good feeling.”

Goddard was also grateful to give the Town supporters something to cheer, with them having to endure defeats in two local derbies during the team’s recent losing streak in League One.

“They deserved that because it has not been particularly good in the last few weeks,” added Goddard.

“It is always good to see people follow us on the road. The home fans have been great; we just need to try to repay them with some wins and some results. That’s what we will look to do and it was good to see them happy on Saturday.”
