HEAD coach Luke Williams admits his Swindon Town troops are still learning how best to add a hard edge to their free-flowing game.

Town have built up a reputation for easy-on-the-eye football over recent seasons and look to win matches by retaining possession and passing around the opposition.

However, they can be caught out when contests turn into blood-and-thunder affairs as it is not their natural style of play.

Williams believes his troops sometimes overcompensate in physical matches, which can lead to rash decisions, highlighted in the recent local derby away at Oxford United where two Town players were shown red cards.

It was a similar story in Tuesday night’s defeat at home to another near neighbour, Bristol Rovers, as Swindon’s over-eagerness to win the ball led to mistakes that allowed the Gas to capitalise.

Although Williams is eager to see a core of steel run through the Town side, it is something that they are still working on perfecting and he wants to see less rushes of blood to the head and more calculated risks from his players.

“We have got a problem because we try to be physical and aggressive and people get sent off,” Williams told BBC Wiltshire.

“We tried to be aggressive too many times on Tuesday night and made the wrong decisions, and people dived in and they got around us.

“We need to be controlled and we need to be able to be aggressive in a controlled manner.

“On Tuesday, I think we lost our heads too many times. People dived in at the wrong moment and tried to jump for a header and let the guy get behind them and so on.”
