BEN Davies will play twice for the Swindon Wildcats this weekend before he jets off in search of the American dream.

The 25-year-old Great Britain international joined Aaron Nell’s Cats as a surprise signing on the eve of the new season in August but his short-term stay at the Link Centre expires Saturday’s clash with the Telford Tigers and Sunday’s trip to the Guildford Flames.

Former Cardiff Devils and Braehead Clan man Davies, who also played seven times for Swindon during the 2008-09 season, will be trialling for Virginia's Norfolk Admirals, who play in the ECHL, one of the United States’ five minor hockey leagues, which was formerly known as the East Coast Hockey League.

Davies says his Wildcats spell has played its part in getting him in tip-top shape for his trial and will contribute to the forward sufficiently impressing his prospective American employers.

“This weekend will be my last weekend and then I go over to the east coast for a trial in the East Coast Hockey League,” said Davies, who has scored three goals and racked up two assists in his four Cats appearances to date.

“I’m going over to try over for Norfolk.

“I’ve got a lot of ice and I’m in good game-shape. I’m just trying to work on things that I’m trying to work on and being in the best spot I can be for when I go over there.

“I’m excited for it. It’s a new experience for me and I’m looking forward to trying it out.”

Davies was on-target twice against the Hull Pirates last Sunday but his brace couldn’t prevent Swindon slipping to a 4-2 defeat.

The Welshman said: “I think we battled hard throughout the whole game and obviously, bounces didn’t go our whole way for the majority, so it was a tough one to take.

“I think maybe we played with a little bit too much respect for them.

“I think that the next time Swindon play Hull, they’ll be coughing up the pucks and hopefully, a couple of guys will put the puck in the net a lot more.

“It was just one of those games where it didn’t work out for them.

“My goals were both scrappy goals. They were not so much skill goals and just hard work, I guess.

“The first one; I tried to make a pass and it ended up going in the net and I’ll take that.”

Despite a spirited display, Cats’ loss at Hull was their third from four outings at the beginning of the 2016-17 campaign and leaves them with work to do as they prepare to host Telford, who have won all of their matches so far, on Saturday.
