ROYAL Wootton Bassett reinforced their South West One East credentials at weekend with an impressive win over Old Centralians on Saturday.

Alan Low watched his side record a 19-13 home victory, meaning they’ve won their last two fixtures at their new level following their promotion from the Southern Counties South division last year.

Low said despite the good start, he is still concentrating on performances, not results.

“We are absolutely chuffed with the result. The performance was really good, they’ve done a great job,” said Low.

“We said that in the first few weeks of September, it was the performance that was more important and they’re actually picking up results as well.

“We will keep them focused on the performance and if we get the result too, then fantastic. Hopefully they’ll start growing into the league.

“Physically, they (Old Centralians) are a big side and although we are a young side, we matched them in all aspects which was pleasing.”

Bassett were soon in control when Connor Tomley and Ieuan Clements made it 8-0 with a try and a drop goal respectively.

The visitors, who were relegated from National Three South West last season, hit back after a lapse in concentration from Bassett which saw them reduce the deficit with an unconverted try. However, David Hogg made it 11-5 at the break after slotting home a penalty in the sixth minute of added time.

The second half started with a long midfield battle, but Bassett broke into the Centralians half and from the ensuing ruck, Centralians were penalised for coming in at the side and Hogg slotted the penalty.

The visitors enjoyed a period of control and looked certain to go over the line with a four-man overlap, only for them to spill the ball forwards.

After playing advantage, the referee went back to award Centralians a penalty, which took the score to 14-8, but Kyle Lovell furthered Bassett's lead when he crossed the line despite attention from the opposition.

The Gloucester side continued to press for the losing bonus point and in the eighth minute of added time, they went over in the corner to travel home with something.
