SWINDON Robins skipper Jason Doyle claimed his second Grand Prix success of the year last night with a stunning victory in the Grand Prix of Poland.

Australian ace Doyle got the better of reigning world champion Tai Woffinden in a thrilling final at Gorzow to triumph and climb up to second in the standings as a result.

The 30-year-old’s victory follows his maiden GP success in the Czech Republic in June and continues his rich vein of form in the sport’s top-tier competition, having finished runner-up in Sweden last time out.

American three-time world champion Greg Hancock is now the only man ahead of Doyle in the standings on 94 points to the Aussie’s 87.

Having got the better of Great Britain’s Woffinden, with fellow Australian Chris Holder third and home rider Bartosz Zmarzlik fourth, Doyle declared the final in Gorzow as one of the best races he has ever been involved in.

“I knew Tai was getting around the kerb very fast. He passed me in the semis and I was thinking ‘oh no, not again,” Doyle told speedwaygp.com.

“I had to go three laps on the fence. I picked up some speed and went wide again on the last corner. To get it on the finish was an amazing feeling. I couldn’t believe it.

“What a great night. To win in Gorzow is very special because they have so many fast Polish boys. (Niels-Kristian) Iversen and (Matej) Zagar ride here week in, week out too. It was going to be tough, so I was happy with scoring a few points and getting to the semi.

“I’m not sure why anyone didn’t take gate one for the final. When I rocked up there, it was prime. Today was very special.”

Doyle admits he is exceeding his expectations in only his second season in the GP series but admits it would be a huge thrill to still be in the title race come the competition finale in Melbourne in October.

“I’m chasing a world title, but I want to be in the GPs next year. We never expected to be second in the World Championship. We’re pushing hard and now a bit of confidence is coming; that’s a massive part,” added Doyle.

“I have a really good team too. The mechanics are really working hard. We haven’t been away from a speedway track for nearly two weeks now. They’re working tirelessly with all the bikes.”

“It would be a dream come true to come to Melbourne and win the title but it’s going to be very hard to keep up these points. I know it’s a long way, so we’re just enjoying it.”

The next round of the Speedway Grand Prix series will be the first German SGP on September 10.
