SWINDON Town head coach Luke Williams is calling on more from his players despite a 1-0 win at home to Port Vale.

Bradley Barry gave Swindon all three points when he latched onto a ball into the box from Michael Doughty two minutes after the break before finding the roof of the net with his left foot.

Swindon started the game well but fell away towards the end of the first half and Williams says that he has seen plenty to work on moving forward.

“It was not a fantastic performance,” he told the local media.

“I thought we started very well, exactly what we wanted from the team.

“We lost our way in the last 15 minutes of the first half, I thought we were very poor.

“We certainly need to improve on that if we are going to do anything this season.

“We created the best chances to score but just not really clean enough and not tidy enough, too many scruffy, bad decisions and turning over the ball too easy at times.

“We always felt that we were in with a chance of winning the game.

“We know that if we keep clean sheets regularly then we have got a chance to compete in the division.”

After starting at Gillingham in mid-week without a recognised striker, Town handed a first start to new signing Nathan Delfouneso as well as welcoming back Luke Norris from injury to mark his home debut.

However, with neither fully up to full game fitness with Delfouneso having not had a full pre-season under his belt, Williams was forced to change things a bit at half time and was pleased to see it had the desired effect.

“We wanted to press higher up the pitch but it was not possible today,” he added.

“We’ve got two front men that are not 100 per cent match fit and it would be suicide for me to ware those two boys out early.

“We were slower to press than ordinarily we would like to be. We also needed to change because Anton Rodgers and Michael Doughty were probably in the positions covering the front player so we reversed that around.

“We put Michael as a midfield player on his own in front of Anton (Rodgers) and Yaser (Kasim) and then Yaser and Conor (Thomas) to open up the line of pass to the front men so we could try and play off them a bit more.

“It worked quite well, Michael found some space behind the front players and in front of the two midfield players and that is probably where the goal came from.

“We tried to help the boys to get into the final third.”
