SWINDON Town Ladies wrapped up the FA Women’s Premier League South West Division One title in style as an Abby Picton hat-trick secured an 8-0 win over Shanklin Ladies.

Braces from Beth Westlake, Meg Vella added to a strike from Sarah Uzzell to complete the one-sided affair and secure promotion to the Southern Division – the third tier of women’s football in England.

Swindon took the lead in the seventh minute as Vella turned a Mich Rich corner goalbound.

Her effort was blocked by Shanklin keeper Georgia Dye but Westlake was on hand to bundle the ball over the line at the far post.

The hosts had the better of the first half but failed to take several of their chances to take a narrow 1-0 lead at the break, with Vicky Wright somewhat untroubled in the opening period.

It took less than two minutes for Swindon to double their advantage after the restart as Vella saw her cross-cum-shot saved by Dye but the loose ball fell straight to the feet of Westlake to finish into an empty net.

Swindon extended their advantage in the 52nd minute when Westlake turned provider to find Vella on the edge of the box and the Town forward cut inside on the edge of the box before finding the bottom corner.

Vella got her second of the game and Town’s fourth on the hour mark as she drove to the edge of the box on the left and found the far corner with her shot.

Swindon’s fifth came in the 68th minute when Westlake put it on a plate for substitute Uzzell before Picton made it six a minute later.

Picton’s long range effort made it seven and Shanklin came the closest to getting their opener when Gemma Woodford’s free-kick dropped in the box and came back off the crossbar.

The rout was complete in the 88th minute when Picton wrapped up her second-half hat-trick with an effort from close range that went in off the bar.
