LUKE Williams is remaining cautious over whether or not to give an array of his young talents a chance to shine in Swindon Town’s final two games of the season.

Last Saturday’s 1-0 win at home to Chesterfield secured Town’s League One status for another season and they will be unable to climb into the top half of the table before the current campaign is over.

Town have plenty of fringe players hungry to prove themselves, although some of those struggled to step up to the mark when the squad was hit by a bout of injuries earlier this month.

When asked whether he thought Town’s remaining two games, starting away at Rochdale this afternoon, were good opportunies to experiment, head coach Williams hinted that he was keen on the idea but would not be making wholesale changes.

“Yes, I think so, but we have also learned that putting too many players in at the same time that are lacking in experience is not necessarily the best way,” Williams told BBC Wiltshire. “It’s something that we would never have planned to have done. It was a case of needs must.

“With the last two games, we certainly want to maintain a very high level of performance so that the whole group can feel positive going into next season.”

One youngster who Williams feels has come to the fore in the last month is James Brophy, who has benefitted from the suspension handed to Brandon Ormonde-Ottewill for his off-the-field conduct.

The 21-year-old joined Town from non-league last summer and has started the last four matches.

“I think he has really put his hand up and is making a statement that he wants the shirt,” said Williams.

“I think he is a very exciting player to watch and I think he is growing in confidence, and is able to turn and face his opponents more readily. I think he has really staked a good claim.”
