PEWSEY Vale skipper Phil Vallis reckons talk of Twickenham will stay confined to alcohol-fuelled conversations for now despite his side moving to within two wins of a trip to the home of English rugby.

Saturday’s 15-3 win at Oxfordshire side Didcot handed the villagers the Southern Counties Junior Vase - their second piece of silverware already this season - and pitched Pewsey into a South West final date against Gloucester’s Widden Old Boys later this month.

Victory in that tie - effectively a national quarter final - at their own Wilcot Road on February 27 would take Vale to a semi final against the winners from the London & South East region with the prize of a May final at Twickenham at stake.

Pewsey are enjoying a stellar campaign, lifting the Dorset & Wilts Vase in November while their unblemished Dorset & Wilts Two North campaign sees them hold a mammoth 22-point lead at the top of the table with seven matches left.

An appointment at English rugby’s headquarters would trump all those achievements, but captain and number eight Vallis insists his squad are determined to stay in the moment.

“I think that the more pints that are drunk, the more talk there is about Twickenham, but we’re really taking it a game at a time,’’ he said. “There are always a lot of things that can happen and, at this stage of the cup, you don’t know a lot about your opponents.’’ Vallis, in his second season as skipper, was a try scorer in Saturday’s success and has hailed the teamwork that has taken Vale to lofty heights this season.

Pewsey were relegated from Dorset & Wilts One North last season, winning only three of their 22 games, and the captain said: “It was a tough year, but we stayed together as a squad, got a few players back and they have stepped up this season.

“We know the way we want to play and the players have taken that on.

“Hopefully the weather will improve a bit (for the Widden match), the ground will dry a bit because we like to play a running game.

“The further you go (in the cup) the more interest there is and it’s nice to get a home match and hopefully we can get a fair bit of support.’’
