Looking back at the dramatic last game between Town and Sheffield United could provide some interesting sub-plots for today’s meeting.

With Swindon’s 2-1 lead from the first leg, they had a 5-1 aggregate lead after 20 minutes of the second leg. That should have been game over, done and dusted.

Because of the way Swindon were playing they weren’t able to close a game out.

Even with a four-goal advantage, they kept playing football. There is playing football and there is playing to win. There was a sense in the ground it was not over.

I was sitting with Steven Pressley, we looked at each other and said ‘is that it?’ Then we both promptly shook our heads.

I was quite angry. I’m a Swindon fan and quite good friends with the manager and it should have been over.

They could not manage the game and tighten things up.

If Sheffield United’s late goal had not been ruled out for offside, with them having all the momentum, you would then think there was really only one way it could have gone and it was not with Swindon.

It was one of the most incredible games. For the TV company it was great theatre.

Sheffield United left with their tails between their legs and yet another couple of minutes and they could have been the team going to Wembley.

If you look at the Swindon team now, only Jordan Turnbull, Yaser Kasim, Nathan Byrne and Michael Smith remain, so there is no legacy there from that point of view.

But from the Sheffield United point of view they will be, I would suspect very, very similar, probably more than seven of the same side. Whatever anyone else says, fans, supporters or players, they will want – for want of a better word – revenge.

They could have been watching the play-off final and thinking ‘we could have made a better fist of it than Swindon did.’ Both teams are coming in with more in the locker.

Will it get personal? I think it will mean more to Sheffield United with regards to the game last season.

You do not get too personal as a footballer, but if you are going to get personal this is the sort of setting and situation where you would.

Some of those Sheffield United players will be thinking: ‘I could have gone to Wembley I could have been a Championship player. We got caught cold, but finished stronger and they stopped us getting anywhere’.

If anything’s going to happen then it’s going to happen today.

Whether that affects anything or not I do not know, it will be an interesting game that’s for sure.
