DOCTORS have confirmed that Swindon Robins number one Darcy Ward will be moved to a clinic in the UK within the next 24 hours.

The announcement was made by club doctor Robert Zapotoczny at a press conference held by Ward’s Polish club Falubaz Zielona Gora.

Despite not being able to give any further update on the extent of Ward’s injuries, at the request of Ward’s father George, it was said that the 23-year-old’s condition was getting better.

It is understood that Ward will fly out of the airport in Przylepa to a clinic three minutes away from the rider’s home in Dorset.

It has been decided that it would be better for Ward to be somewhere with English-speaking doctors and his mother is expected to join Ward when he arrives.

Ward underwent an MRI scan on Wednesday and Dr Zapotoczny says that has given them a glimmer of hope, but would not know more for at least a month.

"First of all, I spoke to Darcy yesterday and his closest family too – I mean his father, who arrived yesterday," said Dr Zapotoczny.

“His father gave no permission to reveal any specific information. George Ward asked me for forbearance because of the family’s pain.

“The condition of Darcy is better than on Monday. His mental condition especially is better and he doesn’t need so much pain relief right now. Davey Watt and Chris Holder are constantly by his side to support him, so Darcy is even able to smile sometimes.

“A transfer to a UK clinic is planned today. The flight will be in a few hours today or tomorrow morning.”

Dr Zapotoczny says doctors should get a greater idea of Ward’s prognosis in the coming months.

He said: “The case is difficult, but there is a glimmer of hope.

"Hope you cannot take from anybody. Now Darcy faces a very, very intensive process of rehabilitation; psychologically and physically.”

A statement from Poole Pirates on Wednesday afternoon said: "Following a further press briefing held by Darcy's Polish club Zielona Gora today, it has been confirmed that plans are advanced to transfer Darcy to the UK, but at this stage the family have not given their permission for any further details to be released on his full medical condition.

"It is believed that Darcy's mother is due to arrive in the UK shortly, his father George has been at his Polish bedside along with Poole Pirate representatives Neil Middleditch, Chris Holder and Dave Watt."
