ITALY may have claimed a battling Six Nations win in Scotland and Chelsea may have vanquished Tottenham Hotspur to lift the League Cup at Wembley but the sweetest moment of the weekend for Nando Rossi was watching his Marlborough Town side claim their first win in 10 games.

Marlborough remain bottom of the Wiltshire League Premier Division but are now level on points with 17th-placed Corsham Town Reserves after a 2-0 win at Wootton Bassett Town Development, who are just a point ahead in 16th.

Rossi’s men gave their chances of escaping the basement of the divisiona boost thanks to Luke Little’s first-half header from a free-kick and Christopher Deane’s late strike.

“I was very happy because Italy won and Chelsea won but I said to the boys that the most important win was Marlborough,” said boss Rossi.

“We knew that it would be an important game but, for once, I had a strong squad to pick from and a full 14 players.

“We deserved to get our first goal and Wootton Bassett did put pressure on us after that to try and get an equaliser but we defended well and Christopher Deane got us another one almost in injury time.

“We’ve got a few games in hand on the teams above us and hopefully we can try and catch a few of them now.”

Elsewhere in the league, Malmesbury Victoria notched up their second win in a row as they hammered Devizes Town Reserves 5-1, whilst Trowbridge Wanderers took the derby spoils as they beat rivals Trowbridge Town 1-0.

Corsham earned a point as they drew 2-2 with sixth-placed Shrewton United whilst in the Senior KO Cup, Supermarine Sports booked a place in the quarter-finals as they beat Sarum Youth 3-0.
