TREVOR Rawlings says Corsham Town’s game at Warminster Town proved there are much more important things than football as their 6-1 defeat was overshadowed by a severe injury for home skipper Mark Breffit.

Breffit suffered two broken bones in his right leg following a challenge by Corsham’s Jackson Hamilton, which saw him shown a straight red card.

Referee Jo Stimpson called play to a halt for more than an hour and sent both sets of players to the changing rooms as Breffit had to be airlifted to hospital.

Corsham boss Rawlings said: “The injury puts it in perspective and it’s only a game of football. We’d just like to pass on our best wishes and wish him a speedy recovery.

“During that break we were all sat in the changing rooms devastated. Jackson is not that sort of player. I felt sorry for him as he is not a malicious player and it was not a malicious challenge.”

Corsham had been forced to travel to Weymouth Street with a threadbare squad and got off to a slow start, falling behind early on.

Kieron Gleed hauled the visitors level at the break but Warminster struck twice in the opening exchanges of the second half to take control.

And then came the injury to Brefitt with just 12 minutes to go and Corsham were unable to pick themselves up after the lengthy break that ensued.

“We went there with probably the weakest side we’ve had this season. I think we only had five first-team players available because of injuries and work commitments,” added Rawlings.

“That meant we got off to a bad start and they were all over us but once we got ourselves sorted out we deserved to get the equaliser and deserved to be level at half-time.

“In the second half they scored against the run of play and then with us chasing the game, they scored again.

“Then came the injury and we lost a player. We waited over an hour for play to start again and the lads just didn’t get going.

“Warminster were upset by the injury and that lifted their game, whereas I think we were ready to go home.

“If the injury hadn’t happened that scoreline wouldn’t have happened because our minds had gone, but I’m not going to gloss over it or make excuses.”
