LEA & Garsdon Primary School girls’ team reached the Wiltshire Schools U11 Cup final last week, losing narrowly on penalties.

The girls beat Luckington, Minety, Sherston and Oaksey before soundly beating Corsham School 4-1.

Victory secured them a place at the Wiltshire Schools U11 Cup Finals at Chippenham’s Stanley Park where they represented Mid-Wiltshire, taking on Swindon’s Holy Cross RC School, Swindon. After a goalless normal and extra time, Holy Cross clinched victory on penalties.

The team, who conceded just one goal in 12 matches, practices after school with staff member Alison Withers and Lea & Garsdon head teacher Kay Vousden said: “I am incredibly proud of the team’s performance.

“For a small village school to reach the final of a County Cup is no mean feat and is testament to the girls’ hard work, character and enthusiasm.’’ Elsewhere at Stanley Park, in the second level three county competitions, Trowbridge’s Southwick won the Small Schools event, defeating Holt 1-0 in their semi finals before doing likewise against St Nicholas in the final.

The large schools winners were Lawn, edging Kings Lodge 2-1 in a penalty shootout in the final.

Abbeyfield School young volunteers officiated at the event.
