DEFENDING Division One champions Freshford United may not have the points on the board at this stage, but with three games in hand on leaders Bradford United they will fancy their chances of reeling their rivals in ahead of a potential title decider between the teams later in the season.

Chris Birleson’s side closed the gap on Bradford to six points thanks to their 5-2 win at Warminster Town Reserves, although they didn’t have everything their own way and had to come from behind twice to claim their victory.

Craig Sheppard gave Warminster the lead which was cancelled out by Marc Sheppard’s first goal for Freshford.

Matt Dyer reclaimed the lead for Warminster, but once again they were unable to hold onto it as Waleed Bakali restored parity for Freshford, who then took the lead just before half time with Nick Ross giving them a 3-2 interval lead.

A second from Ross gave Freshford some breathing space in the second period and, although Warminster looked for a way back into the game, their efforts were in vain as Steve Roddy fired home the villagers' fifth that helped them leapfrog North Bradley into third spot.

In what was their final league fixture of the campaign, Castle Combe hosted Semington Magpies ahead of their meeting in the Centenary Remembrance Cup next weekend.

Combe, whose hopes of lifting the title disappeared a few weeks ago, were looking to finish with a win, but it was Magpies, with Dave Jenkins in charge for the first time, who took the honours thanks to a 4-1 win.

What was an excellent team performance from the Magpies was given the perfect start with Sean Meer putting them 1-0 up at half time.

Although Combe rallied in the second half and drew level through Quinnan Tarawai, it didn’t take Magpies long to regain the lead, Chris Berrelly scoring for 2-1.

Nigel Hall’s penalty put them 3-1 and they sealed their third win of the season when Eddie Janion bagged his first goal for the club to complete the 4-1 win.
