YASER Kasim won a penalty and also converted one as Iraq reached the semi finals of the Asian Cup in Canberra this morning - but the Swindon Town midfielder will miss his country's last-four clash.

Iraq progressed to a last-four meeting with South Korea after defeating their rivals 7-6 in a penalty shootout following a dramatic match.

Both sides missed their opening penalties in the shootout before scoring their next seven each, Kasim on target with the fifth of those for Iraq.

Substitute Vahid Amiri then missed Iran's eighth penalty and Salam Shakir converted to send Iraq through.

Kasim though will miss the semi final after picking up another booking during the second half of today's clash.

Iraq had fought back from a goal down at half time against their 10-man opponents.

Sardar Azmoun put the Iranians ahead midway through the first half, but they were then reduced to 10 men as defender Mehrdad Pooladi received a second yellow card.

Ten minutes after the break Ahmed Yasin equalised for Iraq, but Town's Kasim was then shown a yellow card, earning him a suspension and ruling him out of the semi final.

Neither side was able to break the deadlock in 90 minutes but, within three minutes of the start of extra time, Younis Mahmood had found the net for Iraq.

Mortez Pouraliganji brought matters level again with Iran's second before a frantic conclusion to the match.

On 113 minutes, Kasim was fouled in the area to win the penalty and Dhurgham Ismail stepped up to give Iraq the lead for a second time. But back came Iran and Reza Ghoochanejad scored their third to send the match to penalties.

Iraq face South Korea on Monday, while Massimo Luongo's Australia feature in the other semi final on Tuesday, against Japan or the United Arab Emirates, who were facing each other in the last quarter finals this morning.
