ANDY Williams admits that he was disappointed to find himself on the bench following the arrival of Jon Obika at Swindon Town - but has vowed to fight for his place.

The 28-year-old, who missed the majority of last season following a cruciate ligament injury, laid down a marker for a recall on Saturday with a stunning strike in the 2-2 draw with Oldham Athletic after coming on a substitute for Michael Smith.

“It’s important to me when I’m not in the starting line-up I want to come on and score a goal,” he said.

“I was more than a little bit disappointed, if I’m honest, not to play at Bradford - I thought I’d come back, scored two in four games and been performing quite highly.

“So I was very disappointed to be on the bench and hopefully I won’t be there for too long.

“It’s great to have competition for places, it’s important for the club to have competition to keep everyone on their toes and to give you options from the bench as well.

“If you’ve got people that come off the bench and score goals it’s always important because the starting XI aren’t always going to be 100 per cent and bang at it, so you might need to change it.”

While Town boss Mark Cooper felt that his side lacked fluency on Tuesday night, Swindon sit in seventh place in League One, one point and a place behind Saturday’s visitors to the County Ground - Sheffield United.

And while Town will be looking to show a little more at the weekend, Williams feels that the Robins have plenty of reasons to be happy with how they have started the campaign.

“I think we set the bar quite high,” Williams said. “I think it’s important we get back to that level, even if the results since have been pretty good as well.

“It’s important that we try and keep performing well. I’ve been very impressed with the group we’ve got here and some of the ways we’ve been trying to play is something I’ve never seen at this level before and something that really excites me.”
