TOM Reed was quick to find a silver lining to his Commonwealth Games defeat to England judo teammate Owen Livesey on day two of Glasgow 2014.

England continued their dominance on day two by picking up another three golds – including Livesey who beat Reed in a tight final contest of the evening.

That followed day one when Ashley McKenzie, Colin Oates and Nekoda Davis picked up the 60kg, 66kg and 57kg titles respectively in Glasgow.

And while Reed failed to join them on the top step of the podium in the -81kg final with Livesey, he did take some solace from securing silver.

"I don't know what happened, it went down to the wire,” he said.

“Fair play to him, it was always going to be a tactical fight and come down to the smallest thing.

“That's judo. You train for six years, and to get a silver – at least I've got something. It was an all-England final so it was a very tense fight.

“There was a lot of pressure and we know each other well. We both got stuck in and it was a great fight and hopefully everyone enjoyed it.

“There have been really good performances from everyone in the England team and the home nations generally.

“There are also people here who haven’t medalled but they’ve put in such hard work and they’re strong fighters – judo is just one of those sports where you need a bit of luck sometimes.

“It was great getting into a final where you know you’ve got a medal, but there is a big difference between being able to say I am the champion and saying I am a medallist and I wanted to be the Commonwealth Games champion.”

Reed missed out on an Olympic place two years ago as Britain were permitted just a single entry in each weight category at London 2012.

Scotland’s Euan Burton got the nod back then but 24-year-old Reed was delighted to have the chance to perform in front of his entire family in Glasgow.

“My parents were there supporting me alongside my uncle and auntie and it’s really nice to have had them there as they hardly get to see me fight,” he added.

“Normally I’m travelling around the world but this is fairly local so it’s the first time since I was a kid they’ve all been together watching.”
