WOOTTON Bassett men endured a mixed bag of results at the Bowls Wiltshire men’s finals at Devizes last weekend - but there was joy at last for the Malmesbury senior men’s triples team.

Bassett had six finalists, admiitedly two were playing each other in the fours final and the club finished with a 50 per cent record.

Kyle Anderson won the champion of champions final beating Holt’s Ben Gadd while Tom Walkley retained his U25 singles crown defeating Westlecot’s Paul Stokes.

Harold Jones’ rink won the all-Wootton Bassett showdown in the fours final against Steve Snell’s quartet while his dad Dave Snell, a member of this losing four, also went down in the two wood singles final to Graham Hatherall (Westlecot).

And Bassett lost in the men’s triples final on an extra end to Alderbury.

However, it was third time lucky in the BW County Over 60s triples final for the Malmesbury trio of Brian Reynolds, Colin Hicks and Malcolm Curtis who edged home 16-15 against Alderbury.

They had lost in the 2010 and last year’s O60s triples finals to the same trio from Wootton Bassett but avoid them this time around.

Curtis’ trio were tied 4-4 with Alderbury after five ends but thanks to four successive counts of two had moved 12-6 up at ten ends.

However, they dropped a five on the 13th end and only led 13-12. But re-grouped to move 15-13 ahead at 15 and 16-14 at 17 and held on for a nail-biting 16-15 win after 18 hard fought ends.

Kyle Anderson, playing this season for  Bassett, beat Holt’s Ben Gadd comfortably in the champion of champions final.

He only led 4-2 at five ends but had stretched his advantage to 13-3 at 11 and just pulled away to win 21-9 at 21 finishing with a count of three.

Bassett’s Tom Walkley had to come from behind to retain his U25 junior singles title after trailing Westlecot’s Paul Stokes 12-6 at 11 ends.

He hit back and with a four on the 14th end led for the first time 14-12 but the match was all-square 14-14 at 16 ends and 17-17 at 19.

A three on the 20th and a single on the 22nd gave Walkley a 21-19 win.

Harold Jones’ rink who won the 2011 title enjoyed a comfortable 25-13 success over Steve Snell’s quartet in the all-Wootton Bassett fours final.

Jones was 9-2 up at ten ends and 14-5 at 14 but pulled back to only 16-13 at 17. However, they roared away again to a 25-13 victory.

A member of his son Steve’s losing fours team, Dave Snell suffered another defeat going down 16-7 after only 18 ends in the two wood men’s singles final to Westlecot’s Graham Hatherall.

Wootton Bassett’s triples team of James Nobbs, Kyle Anderson (sub for Neil Smith) and Gary Morphet, last season’s national triples runners-up at Worthing and Wiltshire champions, lost their county triples crown being edged out on an extra end by Holt.

Morphet’s trio were tied 5-5 at five ends but 13-5 down at eight and 15-10 at 12. They then won the next four ends to go 19-15 up at 16 but lost the last two ends dropping two twos to Holt who forced an extra end which Morphet’s team duly lost.

Apart from club tours, club finals days and floodlight competitions the outdoor season is nearing to a close for another year with only just over another fortnight remaining until the end of the month.
