TODAY'S heavy snow was already taking its toll on the weekend's sporting fixtures throughout Wiltshire.

All matches in the Trowbridge & District League and Chippenham & District Sunday League have been called off ater discussions among officials from the two leagues this morning..

A joint-league statement said: "In the interests of safety for all players, match officials and supporters the management committee of both leagues's have made the decision to postpone all its scheduled fixtures for the weekend due to the adverse weather conditions.

"Even if the snow thaws the temperature is expected to plummet well below zero making for treacherous road conditions, and it was fell for the best interests of all concerned to make a decision sooner rather than later.''

Swindon Town were continuing to appraise the situation ahead of their npower League One meeting with Shrewsbury at the County Ground tomorrow (see separate story at gazetteandherald.co.uk/sport).

There was no word yet on fixtures involving Chippenham Town and Frome Town in the Evo-Stik League Southern Premier Division.

All Toolstation Western League and Wiltshire Senior Cup matches involving county sides were postponed this afternoon, while in the Uhlsport Hellenic League, Malmesbury Victoria's trip to North Leigh Reserves was off, although Wootton Bassett Town's home clash with Old Woodstock Town and Pewsey Vale's meeting with Whitchurch United in Sydenhams League Division One had yet to be postponed.

A Toolstation League statement said: "Following the recent heavy snowfall it has been decided that clubs may postpone their League fixture for Saturday, January 19, without the need for a referee's inspection provided that photographic evidence of the affected area is provided. Please note that other arrangements may be in place for County FA Cup matches.

"Permission to postpone matches without a referee's inspection is for Saturday, January 19 only and further instructions will be issued if the weather continues to cause problems.

"Clubs should be aware that the continuing postponements are creating a fixtures backlog which will lead to increased midweek fixtures.''

In rugby, Corsham's Southern Counties South clash with Frome has been postponed, with leaders Devizes' home meeting against Dorchester and Chippenham's National Three South West fixture at home to Amersham & Chiltern other victims.

Bath Rugby remained confident that their Amlin Challenge Cup clash at home to Bucharest Wolves tomorrow (2.15pm) would go ahead.
