RUGBY: Wimborne 42 Devizes 20

First published in Sport

THIS year’s Twin Counties County Cup final will be an all-Dorset affair after both Devizes and Corsham fell at the last four stage on Saturday.

While Corsham were defeated 57-14 at Weymouth in their semi final, Devizes also found their hosts too strong as Wimborne claimed their place in the final for the first time in 20 years.

With both sides in great form in Southern Counties South – Devizes currently top and Wimborne second – the contest did not disappoint.

The home side got into their stride early on and scored a fine try through centre Tom Brown, which was converted by Tom Moysey.

Wimborne quickly added a second as flanker Sean Murphy crashed over in the corner, Moysey again adding the extras Devizes went close through Craig Bryant and Damon Murphy, but Andy Thompson’s penalty was their only reward before an attack broke down and home wing Jimmy Brokenshire went clear to touch down.

Devizes then lost prop Steve Rowbotham, who was knocked out after a clash of heads and things got worse as Bryant was penalised for a late hit, Brokenshire escaped and sent Moysey over for the try.

Devizes hit back as Jorge Wadman scored after a quick tap penalty took Wimborne by surprise before Moysey booted a penalty to stretch his side’s advantage.

Wimborne’s Will Tarbard was sin-binned in the second half and Wadman got his second of the day after more quick hands.

But Moysey’s chip bounced kindly for substitute second row Tom Napier to gather and touch down, Moysey again converting.

Wadman added his third score soon afterwards, but Moysey knocked over a fine drop goal and Murphy ended the scoring with his second try.
