CHIPPENHAM Town continued their centenary celebrations with a mixed match against Bowls Wiltshire last Saturday.

The club are hosting a series of special matches and functions this season to mark the milestone and this was latest.

The Bowls Wiltshire representative side contained a number of county officials including chairperson Ann Hindley (Wilton) and administrator Sue Ochyra (Devizes) as well as men’s president Colin Sheppard (Amesbury) and junior vice-president Dave Richards (Trowbridge Westbourne) plus ladies junior vice-president Pauline Watson (Calne).

Chippenham Town president John Northover, who was county men’s president in 1999, welcomed all of the Wiltshire officials, players and members to the club.

Chippenham men’s captain John Lucas said: “I think everyone enjoyed themselves and it was a closely fought match.

“The weather was extremely kind as although it poured with rain most of the morning it all cleared away and we bowled in bright sunshine although the wind made it interesting.”

Chippenham Town lost the match narrowly going down to Bowls Wiltshire by five shots. They took the honours on two of the six rinks and drew on another.

Jeremy Haselton’s rink produced the best win by 11 shots while Roger Button’s quartet drew.

Captain John Lucas’ rink staged a remarkable recovery in the top game to grab a last gasp victory coming from 12-24 down at 16 ends to take the next five and win by one shot 25-24.

Chippenham Town’s next big celebration match is on Wednesday, August 29 when they entertain a Bowls England mixed team.
