SHELDON School student Femi Akinbobola scorched to the top of the South West rankings with a superb display of sprinting at the Wiltshire Track & Field Championships.

The Chippenham teenager clocked a lifetime best of 22.79secs to win the U17 men’s 200m at Tidworth, destroying his rivals to cross the line over a second clear of silver medallist Jacob Kelly, of Marlborough & District Junior AC.

That time shaved 0.15secs off Akinbobola’s indoor personal best and marks the first occasion when he has run under 23 seconds outdoors which is a notable landmark for the Team Bath AC athlete.

For good measure, Akinbobola also won the 100m in a personal best time of 11.58secs, though it was wind-assisted, and added a third gold in the 100m hurdles.

Those golds all added up to one of the best performances of the championships on a day that certainly helped the sprinters and throwers.

Westbury sprinter William Kennedy also impressed as he claimed a sprint double in the senior men’s 100m and 200m while John Bentley, Calne, student Joe Carter did the double in the U15 boys’ sprints with times of 12.03secs and 24.95secs, both just outside his PBs set last month.

Sheldon School’s Jake Burkey also completed an impressive treble in the U20 men’s 100m, long jump and javelin events, throwing a big PB in the latter of over 46 metres.

Trowbridge sprinter Abi Davies won the senior women’s 100m and was runner-up in the 200m.

Ebony Hammond also showed quick feet and good technique as she beat her personal best for the second time in a week to win the under 15 girls’ long jump with a leap of 4.96m to go seventh in the South West rankings.

In addition she also raced to a lifetime best of 12.00secs to finish runner-up in the 75m hurdles, which was won in a championship record time of 11.85secs, to go fourth om the South West Rankings.

The Howorth brothers from Hilperton - John, Robert and Rory - were again in excellent form.

Rory was the busiest of the family as he threw a personal best of 13.35m to win the U17 men’s shot, added two centimetres to his PB as he cleared 1.85 to add gold in the high jump and was also runner-up in the javelin with 42.72m, which was just outside his best.

Twins and Robert were involved in one of the best quality and competitive races of the day in the U20 men’s 800m. John edged victory in a swift 1:55.50 as he was chased all the way by Team Bath clubmate Hayden Bailey from Bratton while Robert took third.

All three finished inside 1mins 58.1secs which would have seen them dominated the senior race as well.

Eleanor Webster from near Malmesbury won the U17s 800m, narrowly missing her PB while Caitlin Wosika of Bradford on Avon ran away with the U20s 3000m title.

In the throws Gabriella Holt, from Hilperton, secured a golden double in the senior women’s shot and hammer.

Elsewhere Swindon youngster Hannah Lewington smashed her own UK record for the U13 girls’ javelin with a magnificent effort of 39.44m while British and English Schools’ cross country champion Beatrice Wood of Salisbury ran an amazing time of 4mins 28.13secs to win the under 15 girls’ 1500m.

The time puts her 12th on the UK All-Time List and is easily the quickest in her age group so far this year.
