DEVIZES School teenager Alex Sharman swam his way to medals at the recent South West Swimming Championships in Plymouth.

Sharman, who is a member of Trowbridge ASC and trains at the University of Bath with the Team Bath AS Performance team, qualified for seven events but opted to only compete in four.

He finished 13th in the 50m backstroke but made the finals in the 50m, 100m and 200m butterfly events.

In the 50m Sharman qualified in 10th for the final, but a strong personal best brought him a fifth-placed finish.

In the 100m event, he qualified third, but a strong second length saw him finish with the silver medal.

The 200m event, arguably his strongest event, Sharman qualified in second place and in the final he and Team Bath counterpart Ethan McNeil were neck and neck, Sharman eventually coming out with the gold medal as 16-year-old regional champion by 0.09 seconds – both swimmers finishing four seconds clear of the rest of the field.

Sharman now faces a wait until early June to see if he has qualified to swim at either the British or English summer swimming championships.
