ST JOHN’S Academy student Kieran Short represented Wiltshire as its only senior decathlete at the English School’s Combined Events Championships.

Short, who competes for Marlborough & District Junior Athletics club (MADJA) as an U20 and is in Year 13 at St John’s, achieved a creditable 21st place from the 34 in Lincolnshire.

In his first year as a senior athlete, the 17-year old set three new PBs in the pole vault finishing with 2.8m.

He also set new bests in the javelin and discus and performed close to his best in the 100m, 400m and 1500m, finally scoring 4962 points.

Meanwhile, Marlborough’s Thomas Holmes won the U15 javelin at the Mark Cawte Memorial Jumps and Throws meeting in Swindon.

Holmes threw a huge new best of 55.66 which led to a jump in national rankings from fifth to third place.

It has been a transformative season for Holmes, who is also a pupil at St Johns. He took the national title at the ESAA Champs in Birmingham in July, and has nine times thrown in excess of 50m and improved his PB by 11.46m.

Recognising his dedication, continuous improvement and results Holmes was named MADJA Athlete of The Year at the end-of-season awards from club patron and 1968 Olympic 400m hurdles gold medallist David Hemery.
