IT has been a long season but Devizes athlete Imogen Dawe-Lane is ending it much as she started – in winning form, writes KEVIN FAHEY.

The 16-year-old Dauntsey’s School student continued her terrific season with a hat-trick of victories in the fourth and final match of the Avon Track & Field League winning the U17s 300 metres hurdles (46.6secs), the 100m and 200m in 13.0secs and 26.9secs respectively.

None of those marks will affect Dawe-Lane’s standings in the South West rankings for U17 women, which make impressive reading.

As the season comes to an end Dawe-Lane finds herself second in the 300m hurdles (PB of 44.46secs), third equal in the 80 hurdles (PB of 11.85secs), fifth equal in the 200m (PB of 26.2secs) and 20th in the 100m (PB of 13.0secs).

Unfortunately those victories weren’t enough to help her club Team Bath win that final match as hosts Yate & District AC pulled out all the stops to ensure they claimed first place on the day to wrap up the league crown.

“It has been a fantastic campaign , as we finished level on points with Yate at the top, well ahead of the rest of the league, finishing second only narrowly on individual points,” said Team Bath team boss John Webster, who is based in Alderton, near Malmesbury.

“We narrowly missed out by on a day of many excellent performances from Team Bath athletes on the track and in the field and there were no fewer than 25 first places, 18 second places and 16 third places and three 1-2-3s and four 1-2s.”

Phoebe Card, from Bradford on Avon, did the double again in the U13s sprints winning the 75m in 10.2secs and 150 metres in 20.8secs while Bratton’s Hayden Bailey won the U17s 400 metres in style in 54.4sec having already won the 1500 metres. Westbury-based Will Kennedy won the senior men’s 100m (11.2secs).

Once again Team Bath dominated the middle distance races on the track with three clean sweeps and two 1-2 finishes.

Sarah Wilson (2:21.5) beat teammate Jade Littlechild, of Corsham, in the U17s 800m and Eleanor Webster won the U15s 800m in 2:28 ahead of team mates Enya Maylor in second and India Ibbotson in third as the trio finished well clear of the field.

The men, too, ended the season in fine style with Hilperton’s John Howorth winning the senior 1500m in a time of 4:20.8 just ahead of clubmate Cameron Perkins from Chippenham.

Remarkably there were clean sweeps in both the U17 and U151500m age groups.

Hayden Bailey won the U17 race in 4:15.8 with Themis Bower, who lives in Marshfield and Robert Howorth completing the top three while in the U15s Rory Howorth (4:28.5) led home Justin Davies and James Gordon.

Sheldon School’s Joe Collins won the U17 men’s 400 metres hurdles in great style in 59.7secs and other winners included Trowbridge’s Will Browne in the U15s long jump (5.42m) – he also came second in both the 100m and 200m - Kenneth Muhumuza in the senior long jump (5.49m) and Beccie Ousby in the U17 women’s triple jump (9.82m).

Ella Adams won the U17 pole vault (2.63m) and came second in the discus throw while Phoenix Wicheard won the U15 girls shot (7.92m).

Archie Carr, aged 14, threw an impressive personal best of 42.1 metres to win the under 15s javelin and move up to third in the South West Rankings. Keelan Tucker secured yet another one-two for Team Bath.

The U15 girls relay team of Rhiannon Bowen , Ellie Mount , Eleanor Webster and Phoenix Wicheard and the senior women’s squad of Southwick’s Zoe Mattacks, Sarah Long , Char Burkey and Anna Burt both stormed to victory in their respective races while the U13 girls finished second and U17 women third.

There were also second places for Jenna Blundell in the U17 girls shot, Renee Jelf in the U17 women’s high jump, Rory Howorth in the U15 boys 300m, Lawrence Martindale in the U13s 1500m, Imam Qazi in the masters 100m, Louis Torto in the senior 400m and Sheldon School’s Jake Burkey in the U17s long jump.

Wiltshire will be sending a strong representation to the English Schools’ Combined Events Championships in Exeter this weekend with Rory Howorth, Jake Nickerson and Jenna Blundell all in action.
