THE National Superbike Grand National was held at Castle Combe last weekend, 65 years since the first motorcycle event was held at the circuit.

On Sunday, a host of riders past and present took to the track in a parade of different eras.

However, when it came to competitive action, Isle of Man TT competitor and Combe motorcycle track day instructor Daniel Cooper was in a class of his own on his BMW 1000 RR.

He took two victories in the Phoenix Motorcycles of Trowbridge Open races, with the second triumph seeing him crowned King of Combe for the third time.

Cooper also notched up a victory in the Switchgear Systems powerbike race and two race wins in the Open 600cc races on a Moto 2 machine backed by Turner Racing of Bath.

He also competed on a TZ 250cc Yamaha for Turner Racing in the National ACU 250 GP on Saturday when he finished seventh behind Broughton Gifford’s Darrell Higgins, who has qualified third in damp weather conditions.

Despite being up with the front runners in the early stages, Higgins fifth on his Dennis Trollope Racing backed TZ 250 in fine and dry weather.

In his second race on Sunday, in hot and sunny weather, Higgins made a great start and held second place on lap one before eventually finishing in seventh place to leave him seventh in the championship standings.

Higgins’ son, Travis Vince, made his racing debut on a 675cc Triumph and had his best result of the weekend with 16th place in Saturday’s Sound of Thunder race despite starting from the back of the grid as he slid off his bike during his first race.
