WILTSHIRE teenager Pete Kibble finished third in the Abergavenny Handicap road race last weekend.
The youngster, from the hamlet of New Zealand, near Calne, was taking part in his first ‘handicap race’, where competitors set off at different times, depending on their race licence category.
Kibble’s group for Elite, first and second category riders was set off five minutes after the other groups on a 47-mile, three-lap course.
After the first circuit, his group had closed the gap to three minutes 30 seconds, with another two minutes coming off after the second lap.
Hitting the front with three miles remaining, Kibble sprinted to third at the finish.
He said: “I was very pleased and surprised by the result. My physique is more suited to hilly races and not this sort of flat race.”
