ROYAL Wootton Bassett head coach Alan Low has called on his players to do their talking on the pitch after their 15-12 win away to Walcot took them to the top of Southern Counties South.

With previous leaders Midsomer Norton not playing, Bassett took full advantage with a hard-fought win to hit the summit.

Despite reaching the top for the first time this season, Low, is not concerned about the table at this stage and is just happy to see his team performing on the pitch.

“The bit for me is that actions speak a lot louder than words,” he said.

“As a coaching team, what we want to see is action from the players because you don’t win a tournament or any competition on the day.

“You win with the preparation that is put in. People don’t go to the Olympics on the back of the one Grand Prix prior - it is all the hard work that goes into the four years of preparation before it.

“That is the bit we have got to get right and the players have got to let their actions do the talking.

“Midsomer have got Bradford on Avon to play, so they have a game in hand on us. We have just got to continue what we are doing.

“It was a potential banana skin, because they (Walcot) are a tidy side at home and the conditions created the kind of day when you get upsets.”

Bassett were able to battle the elements and first-half tries from Josh McCafferty and Phillip Bardwell put the visitors in a commanding position at the break before David Hogg’s penalty at the start of the second half proved the difference.

“It was a real tough game and we were expecting that but the conditions up in Bath were horrendous,” added Low.

“The rain was pretty much horizontal when we turned around in the second half and we played some bloody good stuff.

“The try that we scored was superb. The conditions really deteriorated then and Hoggy took a penalty early on, which I felt should have gone for the corner, but as it turned out ,it was decisive in the end and was the three points that won the game.

“We saw it through for a really good victory and hopefully it keeps us in good stead to where we want to be come the end of the season.”
