GREAT Britain sprint canoeist Hannah Brown was named sports personality of the year at last week’s Wiltshire Sports Awards in Trowbridge.

The 25-year-old, from Bradford on Avon, a K1 sprint world champion at the 2014 World Wildwater Championships, made the GB squad for this summer’s Canoe Sprint World Championships in Milan and finished 0.03 seconds off a bronze medal in the K2 200m alongside partner Emily Lewis.

Elsewhere, Chippenham paracyclist Lauren Booth, who became a British national champion in the 500m time trial last year and is the junior British record-holder for the 2k youth pursuit, C4 flying 200m and 500m time trial, picked up the personality of the year award for an athlete with a disability for a second successive year.

The unsung hero of the year award went to Chippenham’s Julia Mannering, who was honoured for her extensive work for Chippenham Sailing and Canoe Club, including spearheading more than £130,000 of fundraising to pay for a new facility.

Meanwhile, Calne Alpha Swimming Club’s Ritchie and Chrissie Lab jointly picked up the voluntary coach of the year gong.

Former England rugby captain Phil de Glanville hosted the ceremony, with serial adventurer James Ketchell – the first person to have rowed across the Atlantic Ocean, successfully summited Mount Everest and cycled 18,000 miles around the world – as guest speaker at the event.
