MALMESBURY’S English light-welterweight champion Joe Hughes’s outing at the Oasis Leisure Centre in Swindon lasted just three minutes as he waltzed to the 13th win of his career.

Unable to defend his St George’s strap after scheduled challenger Glenn Foot wasn’t sanctioned by the British authorities, the 25-year-old was thrust into a clash with an inexperienced Czech opponent with just five professional fights to his name.

Hughes bided his time in the opening round, soaking up what Bartunek threw at him before unloading vicously on the counter and the difference in class was apparent to see as Hughes’ teenage opponent was left with blood spewing from a cut above his left eye.

Referee Lee Cook took one look at Bartunek’s nasty cut and waved off the contest, making for a short night’s work for the Malmesbury champion, who barely got out of first gear.
